The authors wanted to show two graphs side-by-side, one in which survey respondents could select multiple choices, and one in which they had to choose one. I wanted to make it clear to the reader how the categories in each graph were connected, so I gave each bar a different color and used colored, dashed lines and labels to connect the categories.
